Clinical Information

C. difficile is a gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacillus linked from diarrhea to the more severe life-threatening pseudomembranous colitis. Mature colonic bacterial colonization in a healthy adult is generally resistant to C. difficile colonization. The most common risk factor is exposure to antibiotics. The primary virulence factor from C. difficile is the cytotoxin B.
