Clinical Utility

Haptoglobin is an acute phase protein that binds hemoglobin irreversibly. Its function is to transport intravascular, free hemoglobin to its degradation site in the reticulo-endothelial system. Measurement of haptoglobin may aid in the diagnosis of hemolytic diseases related to the formation of hemoglobin-haptoglobin complexes and certain kidney diseases.
